Simply put, the Bible is the greatest text ever composed and the best
selling book of all-time (100 million copies/year). It contains 66 books
that were written by roughly 40 different authors over a period of 1600
years. Amongst the group were noble kings, humble shepherds, hardened
soldiers, and simple fisherman, to name a few. The Bible was originally
written in three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, but since then
has been translated into thousands. One key element that makes the
Bible so unique is its 2000 prophecies of which many have been fulfilled.
It explains the past, illuminates the present, and reveals the future.
Its pages contain the answers to all of life’s ultimate questions -
who we are, where we are going, and what is our purpose.
You might be wondering how such an incredible book ever came into being.
The answer is given in
2 Timothy 3:16
- “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” The word "inspiration"
means "God breathed," that is, God breathed words into the authors who
then wrote them down. Even though men wrote the Bible, its words, themes
and truths all come from God. Inspiration explains both the Bible’s unity
and why it has influenced and changed so many lives.
Thankfully, we can trust that the Bible today is the same Bible read by
believers thousands of years ago. There are several copies of Old Testament
books that date back to 200 BC, and remarkably, 5366 complete copies of the
New Testament in existence today.
